Prince Street House

Princes Street House demonstrates how strategic, light-touch interventions can transform the experience of a home.
Working within a modest budget, the scope was confined to a redesign of the main bedroom suite and a subtle reworking of the living spaces to strengthen their connection to the existing Japanese garden. The result is a design that celebrates the small pleasures a home can offer us in our everyday lives.

The clients purchased this home to serve as a gathering point for their children and grandchildren. While the existing structure was sound, the layout was compartmentalised and ill-suited to large gatherings.
The design process began by testing significant interventions, including a major extension and a detached rear studio, to test the site’s full potential, but these initial concept designs ultimately highlighted the value of working within the existing footprint.

After many conversations, the design strategy centred on reworking the internal layout to elevate the experience of the home as a whole.
The plan was reconfigured to create a more generous main bedroom suite that supports ageing in place, introducing wider circulation, a more functional bathroom arrangement, and moments of delight through a curved shower and a circular skylight.
Blackbutt joinery, brass handles and tapware, and softly textured bathroom surfaces enrich the everyday rituals of living, lending even the most ordinary moments a quiet sense of beauty.
